About Conservation Colorado

As the largest statewide environmental organization in Colorado, we work to protect our state’s climate, air, land, water, and communities. We play a unique role in Colorado as our work is at the intersection of policy and politics and focuses on organizing communities, influencing decision-makers, and electing conservation-minded leaders.  We believe that achieving racial, social, and environmental justice are critical to our mission.  Our work is leading on multiple issues and in multiple decision-making venues and includes a focus on building the next set of leading policies for the next generation of elected leaders.

What You’ll Do

As a member of our communications team, you’ll be responsible for crafting values-driven content in your designated issue area, across multiple communication channels,  that engages our audience, drives media coverage, and moves decision makers to take action so we can win pro-conservation victories for Coloradoans.    More specifically you'll be responsible for:

Communications Planning & Implementation:  Develop and effectively implement holistic, multi-channel communications plans to support programs and execute communication strategies.

  • Collaborate with campaign managers to develop and implement communication strategies for climate, land use, transportation, and fundraising campaigns.
  • Generate media coverage for key campaigns and topics, positioning Conservation Colorado as a leader in environmental advocacy.
  • Participate in work with external stakeholders to assist in creating and implementing communication strategies on our campaigns.

Content Creation & MessagingCreate and update campaign messaging and write content that is compelling, clear, accurate, and audience-appropriate for all communication channels -- social media, news releases, blog posts, email actions, reports, etc.

  • Ensure materials are culturally competent and inclusive based on the audience and language of communication and determining which materials should be translated.
  • Stay up-to-date on environmental and political issues in Colorado to inform and refine messaging.
  • Review and edit documents for clarity, accuracy, and consistency.
  • Incorporate telling the stories of people directly impacted by climate change and other environmental problems into our content.

In addition to your regular responsibilities, all staff are expected to participate at some level in organizational priorities including helping in certain fundraising efforts, taking part in our election-related activities, and committing to our organizational efforts around equity and inclusivity.

Qualifications

To do any of our work, our staff need to be natural relationship builders, have the resilience to handle tough situations, have excellent problem-solving skills with a results-focused orientation, bring an equity analysis to the work, and be highly collaborative. For this position, fundamentally, we want someone who has the experience and passion to create compelling content and who has the drive to take our work to the next level. More specifically, you will have or be most or all of the following:

Excellent Writing, Editing, and Proofreading SkillsYou will not only need to be an excellent writer who can take complex ideas and turn them into easy to understand content, but also to capture a reader's attention on an emotional level using storytelling and persuasive language to motivate people to take action.  Experience writing messaging, press releases, or effective digital communications preferred.

Good Upwards and Sideways Management Skills:  This role requires a high degree of collaboration and project management skills, working with staff across the organization.  You will need the skills necessary to  get what you need from peers or people above you in the organizational structure so you can manage the work you need to get done without damaging those relationships and making it easy for people to get you what you need

Creativity & Innovation: We are looking for new approaches, creative ways to use language to communicate our message and reach new audiences, and keeping up with the fast changing landscape of social media.  You’ll need to be able to take new ideas and figure out how to execute them and help the team develop new communications tactics.

Manages a high volume of work with efficiencyThere are always multiple campaigns happening at once with competing needs.  You will need to have the systems to manage the work, the attention to detail to make sure deadlines are met, and understand how to spend your time on the most important priorities.

Flexibility:  We work in a shifting political landscape so grace under pressure is a necessary part of the work.  Being open to change and new information and adapting work methods in response to new information is important.

This position does not have an undergraduate education requirement. Spanish/English bilingual is a skill we value, but it is not a requirement. This is a full-time job, but there can be some flexibility in the exact daily schedule.

Compensation and Benefits

The full-time salary range for this role is between $50,000-59,000 based on a wage analysis across the organization and new staff rarely starting at the top of the range. For candidates with higher-level experience and expertise than those stipulated in the qualifications, we would consider a Senior Director-level position, with an accompanying higher salary range.

We provide high-quality health insurance and a strong benefits package that includes a SIMPLE IRA retirement plan with a match, at least 35 days of vacation & holidays in addition to six physical & mental wellness days in your first year, and parental leave and a sabbatical program.
